Kenny Chesney's new single "Carry On" debuted at number 31 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart dated May 23, giving him his 100th entry on the survey — a milestone reached by only a handful of artists in the chart's history. The same week, the song entered Country Airplay at number 20, marking his 100th appearance on that chart as well and tying George Strait's all-time record.

The song was written by Jessi Alexander, Matt Jenkins, and Chase McGill. Chesney co-produced the track with Buddy Cannon.

Every one of the 158 Mediabase reporting stations added "Carry On" to its playlist in the song's debut week — the biggest add day of Chesney's career and only the third time in Mediabase history that a single has locked the entire panel on arrival. Garth Brooks did it in 1997 with "Longneck Bottle." Post Malone and Morgan Wallen did it in 2024 with "I Had Some Help." Nobody else has.

"Carry On" is the first single released on Hey Now Records, the independent Nashville label Chesney launched in March 2026 with manager Clint Higham, former Warner Nashville chairman John Esposito, and Big Machine veteran Kris Lamb. It is the lead single from Silver Sands Marina, Chesney's twenty-first studio album, due September 25, 2026. The Chesney and Buddy Cannon-produced collection runs eleven songs deep. The writing credits read like a roll call of Nashville's finest: BMI Icon and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Matraca Berg, Grammy-winning Brett James, Shane McAnally, Grammy-nominated Jessie Jo Dillon, Tenille Townes, Tony Lane, and Adam Wright. Guests include Colbie Caillat, Lily Meola, and Megan Moroney.

The song itself is built around a 69-year-old bartender at Key West's Schooner Wharf Bar, dispensing the kind of lived-in advice that Chesney has turned into a career. The chorus plays on variations of the word "carry" — carry a tune, carry on, get carried away — before arriving at the line that gives the song its weight: "You can't carry nothing with you, and it won't be long, till it's six carrying you home. Till then you gotta carry on."

Chesney was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in October 2025. He is currently performing a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, where "Carry On" occupies the eighth slot in his setlist. The run continues through July 11.

The song was originally recorded in 2021 by the duo Pryor & Lee before Chesney cut his own version. He has said the track was initially set aside for a songwriter-driven island project before he recognized it belonged somewhere more central. "Sometimes you lock in, thinking a song is supposed to be one place," Chesney said. "And you miss where it might fit better."

Alexander, who co-wrote the song, is a four-time Grammy nominee whose credits include Miley Cyrus's "The Climb," Lee Brice's CMA Song of the Year "I Drive Your Truck," and multiple number ones for Blake Shelton. In late 2024, she was nominated for the Grammy Award for Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical — the first time she received a nomination in that category — for her work on releases by Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, and others. She released her debut album, Honeysuckle Sweet, on Columbia Records in 2005.

Co-writer Chase McGill's credits include number ones for Sam Hunt, Old Dominion, and Brett Young. Matt Jenkins has written hits for Eric Church, Luke Bryan, and Jake Owen.

Chesney's 100 Hot Country Songs entries place him in rare company. His 33 number ones on Country Airplay remain the most by any artist since that chart began in 1990. Strait leads the all-time Hot Country Songs number-one list with 44, followed by Conway Twitty with 40, Merle Haggard with 38, and Ronnie Milsap with 35.
